I absolutely love making simple vinyl projects like this jewelry dish. The CAMEO cuts through vinyl beautifully, leaving me with vinyl designs I can place anywhere. If you haven’t used adhesive vinyl yet, this is the perfect place to start!
What you’ll need:
- Small dish
- Vinyl
- Transfer paper
- Hook
- Scraper
Step One: Preparing the Design
To get a better idea of how large to resize the designs, I created a rectangle the same size as my jewelry dish. Then I resized and rearranged the designs until I was pleased with how it looked. Just remember to delete the rectangle before you cut.
Step Two: Cutting Vinyl
When you’re cutting from a roll of adhesive vinyl, you don’t need to use a cutting mat. Just load the vinyl into your machine while pressing the “Load Media” button. This is the second button from the top on the Portrait and the middle button on the CAMEO’s touchscreen menu. To cut the design, go to “Cut Settings” and select “Vinyl” as the “Material Type.”
Step Three: Weed the Vinyl
Use scissors to cut the design away from the roll of vinyl. Grab the hook and use it to remove the excess vinyl. I like to use a couple pieces of washi tape to keep it flat while I’m weeding the vinyl.
Step Four: Transfer the Vinyl
Cut a piece of transfer paper that is slightly larger than your design. Remove the side of the transfer paper that is not sticky. Place the sticky side of the transfer paper over your vinyl design. Use the scraper to smooth it out. Pull the transfer paper up. The vinyl should release from its backing while staying on the piece of transfer paper.
Place this piece where you want it on the jewelry dish. Go over it with the scraper tool to make sure the vinyl is stuck to the dish. Pull the transfer paper up. The vinyl should stay on the dish.
Isn’t adhesive vinyl so fun and easy to work with? It’s hard not to go crazy and put it on everything!

You can use it with vinyl as long as it is smooth and flat to allow the static charge to hold on to it. Rolled vinyl that wants to go back to its rolled shape will not necessarily work well, and it would need to be trimmed to fit the ES mat cutting area.

Yes, you can use the heat pen while using the ES mat. 🙂
