I’m Suzanne and I’m a calligrapher, bookbinder and designer in the craft industry! I’ve been a letter lover since I was very young and evolved from there. I live on the west coast of Canada with my husband and a really naughty kitty.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

I find inspiration in nature, architecture, creative packaging and wonderful photography and love to put my own “spin” on an idea. The final project, usually translated into paper, seldom looks anything like the thing that inspired it!

How would you describe your style, and how has it changed over time?

As for style, I love cute and I love elegant and I constantly go back and forth between the two. If you hear me yell “squirrel!”, you know I’ve changed direction!

How is your personality reflected in your work?

Can you walk us through your creative process, from the initial idea to the finished piece?

I have designed a lot of basic 3D structures over my years with Silhouette. Often, I will have a fresh idea and apply it to one of these basic structures. Sometimes that involves sketching it out first, but more often I start with shapes on the computer.

What have been your favorite types of designs to create?

I love the challenge of making 3D designs and monogram fonts. I’m always to excited when things finally work out. There is often significant tweaking between first and last variations of the design. I also love making print and cut designs.

When did you realize that you wanted to be an artist and what inspired you?

I never planned on being an artist, I have a degree in Chemistry. But, I’ve always loved the pen to paper thing, so I was a formal calligrapher first, that led into bookbinding (when we had young children) and then on to designing rubber stamps. By then it was impossible to stop!

But I especially love creating with my Cameo! It’s awesome to be able to cut quick cards using my Stencil Card designs or personalize a card by printing and cutting one of my Monogram Fonts. For someone special, I will happily spend the time cutting a 3D design.

Enjoy your Silhouette machines and keep on exploring their possibilities! Happy creating!
