The Silhouette Portrait® 3 is Silhouette’s smallest and most portable cutting machine. It’s perfect for the modern planner or organizer because you can easily make Print & Cut stickers from sticker sheets or labels from vinyl. But it’s also perfect if you want to take your creativity on the go.

Features of the Silhouette Portrait® 3
Perfect for cutting letter- and A4-sized materials
The Portrait 3 is the perfect size for cutting letter- or A4-sized materials, so there’s no need to cut down materials or use materials that are an exclusive size. This means the Portrait 3 is ideal for cutting sheets of specialty material, like sticker sheets or tattoo paper, and cardstock. In addition, the Portrait 3 can cut rolls of material like vinyl or heat transfer that are 9 inches wide.

Create On the Go
Because this machine is much smaller than the Silhouette Cameo®, it is ideal for anytime you want to take your creativity with you. The Portrait 3 is great for smaller projects but is mighty enough to cut or sketch on many common materials.

Matless Cutting Capabilities
The Portrait 3 can perform two different matless cuts in addition to cutting on a cutting mat.
Kiss Cut
A kiss cut is when a material that has a backing is cut without the use of a cutting mat. The cut doesn’t go through the backing; it simply cuts through the material, which is the top layer.

Pop-out Cut
A pop-out cut is when a material like cardstock or other paper that doesn’t have a backing is cut using a special perforated cut mode without a cutting mat. When the Portrait 3 is done cutting, simply unload the cardstock or paper from the machine and remove the cut shapes from the material.

Note: Pop-out cut mode is NOT available on machines older than the Cameo 3 and the Portrait 2. This is because there is a channel underneath the cutting blade on the Cameo 4 and Portrait 3 machines that allows pop-out cuts to be performed.
2 mm Clearance
A deeper clearance means the machine can cut thicker materials. The Portrait 3 has a 2 mm clearance and can use blades like the Deep-cut Blade or the 2mm Kraft Blade to cut thicker materials, such as chipboard and craft foam.
Cutting Length of Up to 10 Feet
Make the most of your cutting jobs with the ability to cut up to 10 feet at one time! This feature helps you be more efficient and use more of your rolls of materials, even if those rolls aren’t quite up to 10 feet long. Having the ability to cut long lengths opens up a lot of options for you.
Automatic Tool Detection
Auto Tool Detection is a feature that all the Cameo 4 machines and the Portrait 3 have. It allows the Silhouette Studio® software to automatically detect what tools are inserted into your machine. This ensures you have the right cut settings every time.

Bluetooth Capable
The Portrait 3 has a Bluetooth® adapter preinstalled and is Bluetooth® compatible. This means that your Portrait 3 can receive cut jobs via Bluetooth without a connection to a USB cord, so it allows for wireless communication.
Driven by Silhouette Studio®
Silhouette Studio® is the powerful software behind any Silhouette cutting machine. With Silhouette Studio® you can create your own designs, import designs, or use designs from the Silhouette Design Store, which has over 170,000 design options.

Is this newer Portrait 3 comparable to the Cricut Joy in any way? Thank you.
Kelly Wayment
January 18, 2021
The Portrait 3 is comparable to the Cricut Joy in that it is small and portable and cuts much of the same media (vinyl, paper, heat transfer). It’s better than the Joy in that you don’t have to buy any specially-sized media. The Portrait 3 uses letter size (or A4) cardstock or other paper, standard 9″ rolls of vinyl or heat transfer, cuts any of Silhouette’s specialty media like various forms of sticker sheets, and it cuts with or without a mat — depending on the material.

would like to know what the down-force is on this new machine.
would also like to know if this portrait 3 can use a standard ratchet blade or os limited to this new blade. I cannot find anywhere in the specs where it covers these items.
Kelly Wayment
January 18, 2021
Downforce on the Portrait 3 is the same as older Cameo and Portrait models (210 gf). You can use a standard ratchet blade in the Portrait 3, which requires the black adapter (available here), if you don’t want to use the included Autoblade.

What are the measurements of the machine? Is it bigger than the Cricut Joy?
Kelly Wayment
January 18, 2021
Yes, the Portrait 3 is bigger than the Cricut Joy and uses standard-size media like 9″ rolls of vinyl and letter-size paper. Unit Dimensions: 16.2 in. x 5.5 in. x 4.4 in. (41.1 cm x 14 cm x 11.2 cm)

Hi
I want to know more this machine. I have a lot of questions??
Whats the difference between the portrait 3 and cameo4? Does portrait cuts different materials like wood? How it print out?can I use photos of my own or only what saved in studio?
Kelly Wayment
January 18, 2021
The Cameo 4 is larger and can cut more materials than the Portrait 3. You cannot cut any wood thicker than then wood veneer with the Portrait 3. Both the Cameo 4 and the Portrait 3 require a separate inkjet printer to use the print & cut function. You can open image files in Silhouette Studio, such as PNG and JPG files.

Can I use this machine to make shirts?
Kelly Wayment
February 12, 2021
Absolutely! Check out our Heat Transfer Essentials class. The class uses the Cameo 3, but the Portrait 3 is fully capable of cutting heat transfer for shirts–just in a smaller size. Most shirts don’t need designs wider than 8 inches that the Portrait can cut. You would need to use a 9″ roll of heat transfer vinyl if cutting directly from a roll.

If I already have the software downloaded, do I have to reinstall it, or just add the portrait to the exsisting software?
Thank You,

You do not need to reinstall the software. It will recognize new Silhouette machines as they are connected. Check the Send Panel and click on the machine icon at the bottom of the screen to find your connected machines that are available.

Here you say it can do a meatless cut. But in your comparison chart it says no. So can this cut a roll of vinyl, as in a long stencil (several feet)?
Kelly Wayment
January 18, 2021
The Portrait 3 can do matless cutting. It will cut vinyl directly from the roll, and yes, it can be several feet long (basically, as long as the roll is).

Different between portrait 2 and 3
Kelly Wayment
January 18, 2021
The machines are the same size, but the Portrait 3 has added the capability of pop-out cutting. The Portrait 3 also has automatic tool detection. The redesigned Autoblade in the Portrait 3 also has a one-touch reset and counts up to the desired blade depth, generally saving time over the Portrait 2’s Autoblade adjustment.

I cannot get my blade to cut. I have a silhouette cameo and a portrait 3. I’m setting up the portrait 3 and the blade is just skimming the surface. I have the auto blade in. What do I do?
Kelly Wayment
March 3, 2021
This video on blade maintenance may help. Most often, either your blade is not fully pushed down before being locked into place, or your mat could be loaded too far to the left and prevent the autoblade from adjusting properly. Silhouette Support Series – Blade Maintenance If this doesn’t help, please reach out to Silhouette Support for further troubleshooting.

Yes, you can use PixScan with the Portrait 3. Make sure you purchase the Portrait version of the mat. https://www.silhouetteamerica.com/shop/blades-and-mats/CUT-MAT-PIX8-3T

Can this cut fabric?
Kelly Wayment
January 18, 2021
The Portrait 3 can cut fabric with a normal blade only if interfacing has been applied. To cut without interfacing, you would need the rotary blade, which is currently only available for the Cameo 4 models.

So like the cricket Joy you have to buy a certain kind of vinyl that is 8 inches wide and the cricket Joy is what four and a half so again we’re buying specialty vinyl
Kelly Wayment
January 18, 2021
You do not need specialty vinyl for the Portrait 3. You can feed standard-size 9″ rolls of vinyl or heat transfer directly into the Portrait machine. Its cutting width is 8″, but standard 9″ rolls fit.

What is the difference between a cameo silhouette 4 and the portrait 3? I have a silhouette 3 now and am getting a 4. I can’t decide if I need a portrait if I have a silhouette? Why would I need both machines?
Can you help me with that?
Kelly Wayment
January 18, 2021
The Portrait 3 is a smaller machine than the Cameo 4. You would generally have both machines if you want a full 12×12″ cutting size (Cameo 4) for larger projects, but want a more portable machine (Portrait 3) for on-the-go. The Portrait 3 is smaller, more portable, and budget-friendly. The Cameo 4 is larger and has more features with its second carriage that holds specialty tools for cutting felt, leather, etc. I hope that helps!

I have a Silhouette Cameo, an older machine. Are some of the new products usable on my machine or do I need to update and get a new machine? I have barely used this machine and its been sometime. Please help.
Kelly Wayment

The vast majority of materials sold in the Silhouette shop can be used on all Silhouette cutting machines, old and new. The product description on SilhouetteAmerica.com lists compatible machines for each media type. You won’t be able to use Curio-specific materials such as the metal etching sheets or metal stippling sheets in other machines. But all printable materials and most specialty media can be cut with all Silhouette models. Avoid thick media (above 1 mm) that won’t fit within the lower clearance of older machines.

Can the Silhouette Studio software be used with the Portrait 3 (and/or the Cameo 4) from an Apple iPad Pro, or does it have to be a desktop PC or Mac?
Kelly Wayment
January 18, 2021
To use your iPad with the Portrait 3 or Cameo 4, you would need to use the Silhouette Go mobile app. This is currently in beta testing, so you’ll need to go through Apple Test Flight before it gets released eventually into the main App Store. Keep in mind that the Silhouette Go app is a simplified program to make cutting while away from your desktop computer simple and easy.
If you want the full software capability and design features, you should run Silhouette Studio, which requires a desktop computer. You can read more about Silhouette Go here.

The Portrait 3 will cut vinyl and heat transfer as wide as 8″ and the full length of a roll, if cutting without a mat. It will work great for designs small enough to fit on a face mask.
